Australia's First Parliament
The Parliament of New South Wales was the first parliament to be established in Australia.
It was here that representative government in Australia began.
Based on the British Westminster system of government, the roles, function and practices of this parliament have evolved over time.
The display presented here recalls the history of an institution that spans three centuries and reflects both tradition and change.
Today, Parliament is where elected representatives debate and vote on legislation – the laws that govern the state. It scrutinises the work of government and provides a space within which the community can engage and participate in the democratic process.
Parliament represents the interests of the people of New South Wales and it seeks to manifest their values and aspirations.
Ongoing democratic engagement and participation of the people is the foundation of this institution and its future rests in their hands.
