Members of major political parties usually vote “along party lines”.  That is, the party agrees to vote in the same way on an issue. Sometimes parties don’t decide on how they will vote and leave it up to individual members.  This is called a conscience vote or free vote.  Conscience votes are usually allowed on matters of social policy, such as abortion and same sex marriage, on which members may have strong personal positions.
