Each new member elected to Parliament gives an inaugural speech, sometimes called the first speech and previously known as a maiden speech.

It is customary that a new member does not participate in debates until they have given their inaugural speech. The speech is an opportunity for newly elected members to mark the beginning of their term as a member of Parliament, to tell the House about themselves and to outline what they would like to achieve as a member.
